What a blessing to have great companions! Some are easier to work with than others, and some are more diligent in working hard. Companions from the Philippines have been a blessing - helping to get fully immersed in the Tagalog language. Good men to work beside in the Lord's work, as well as having made some fun memories to last a lifetime!

Chrstimas Call

It was so good to hear your voice at Christmas! We had a few problems with getting everything set up with Skype but finally, after about 45 minutes, we got things working. We were not able to see you, but you saw us! You had just moved to your new area, getting settled there. It was fun to just chat and laugh with you ... It was shorter than usual but we loved being able to be with you for awhile. It was our favorite Christmas gift!

First Baptism!!

My first baptism was a nine-year-old girl named Sherrizah Albis. Probably the best way I could have celebrated Valentine's Day! We took pictures, sang, prayed, heard talks from two speakers on Baptism and the Holy Ghost, and then did the baptism. I wasn't nervous until I stood up to leave, but when we both were in the font, I remembered what to say and was calm and said it right and did it right (hair and all!), so it was very good. The best part was her face as she came out - a huge smile, which doesn't happen a lot because she's really shy. She smiled huge after she came out and as she went to change. I felt really good - the spirit was so stroong afterward. The water was cold, of course, yet I felt nice and warm the whole rest of time!

We received a letter at the end of December 2008 stating "Your son is assigned in the Daet Zone, to labor in the San Vicente Daet area. His companion is Elder Samuel Robertson. ... This is a wonderful mission, and your son is in for one of the greatest experiences of his life. With your support and encouragement, he will mature and progress beyond your expecations. He will develop a great love for his fellow missionaries, as well as for the people we serve and bless.

Christmas Call

We waited with great anticipation for your phone call at 6:00 a.m. Christmas morning. What a wonderful way to start the day! It was so great to hear your voice and just chat with you for awhile. That 45 minutes went awfully fast! It was Christmas Day night (9:00 p.m.) in the Philippines. You had had a great day - had a zone conference that morning, had visited with members and investigators, and you had been fed, fed, and then fed some more! Elder Robertson was in the background making you both some eggnog as we spoke! You mentioned you were now settled in your apartment, with what sounded like pretty nice amenities. The weather is rainy (drizzle or downpour) almost everyday, with some sunshine mixed in. You were only a couple of hours away from the mission home, used mostly jeepneys or tricycles with side car or walking for transportation. Your language is coming along - you were able to help with a first discussion in Tagalog. You have given your first "short notice" talk in sacrament meeting. The mosquitoes are still a problem, but you are adjusting and learning how to deal with them. You had fun with the Christmas package we sent and enjoyed sleeping on the pillowcase we made - now that you have a pillow! You sounded happy, excited to be there, and already gaining a love for the people of the Philippines! We look forward to Mother's Day to hear your voice once again!

You made it! You left the MTC December 1, 2008, and after lots of time in the air and on the ground, you arrived! As a mom, I must admit, I was more excited to have you in the MTC - an hour away - than half way round the world, but was so excited you made it and you had only positive things to say about the whole trip! Your first companion is Elder Robertson from Mapleton, Utah. What a great way to start - with a companion who has so many of the same interests and hobbies as you! Friendly people, "friendly" mosquitoes (lots of them), and getting a taste of new foods and ideas was a common theme! You and Elder Robertson were opening up a new area, so it was awhile before you got settled in Foster City in your own apartment. With a lot of investigators and visiting of members, you were "engaged in a good work" from the beginning.

The MTC is intense, but awesome!

We get to attend the temple every Monday!

A day is typically breakfast, class, lunch, class, dinner, class, prep for tomorrow, write in journal, sleep, repeat.

It looks like it's going to awesome, and I'm especially excited to learn Tagalog!

The other companionship in my room is really fun, and Elder Farmer is really cool, too.

The president is very funny, but an awesome spiritual speaker, too.

Our classroom is at the top of 5 sets of stairs.

There isn't a lot of variety in the food.

Food isn't really that good.

It takes 2-3 weeks for letters and 406 weeks for packages to get to the Philippines. :)

First Letter!!!

October 10th, 2008 - We got your first letter today!!! And as a bonus, we got another one! One from your first day in the MTC, the other on P-day. We waited with great anticipation the first week you were in the mission home, running to the mailbox as soon as the mailman came. Your first letter was full of exciting new things - great companion and roommates, wonderful Presidency, getting used to the facilities you would be using for the next two months, and a schedule of dawn to dusk (and more) learning how to serve the Lord in your new language - Tagalog. You sounded happy, excited, and a little overwhelmed! You were senior companion the first week - not really knowing at that point what that would entail!

Posted are missionary pictures taken before you left - the top one is the one that will be posted for the next two years in the foyer of our church. Bishop Smith beams with pride each time he looks at those 10 or so young men and two older couples serving the Lord from our ward!

The MTC

On Wednesday, October 1st we traveled to the MTC -Arrival time 11:30 a.m. Volunteers had everything so organized - from parking, to luggage, to pictures, to your lunch ticket, and on and on. We had a few minutes to take pictures, then on into the building while you got your badge and information, then into a short meeting. We sang "Called to Serve" (or at least some did, I couldn't do it through the tears), had some speakers who spoke of your service and what your expereince will be like in the MTC, watched a short video. Then, as one speaker said, make the goodbyes short -it's easier - and after hugs and more hugs, tears from Mom and Dad, and I love you's, off you went. As you looked back through the door you were smiling - excited to start this new experience! Tender moments for sure, but a calm feeling of knowing you were ready and able to serve the Lord!

My FavoriteThings

September we had a month of "My Favorite Things" for you - foods, places, people, etc. You got to make a list and then we tried to do most of them. We ate out a lot . . . Leatherby's (which is a dinner in itself), Golden Corral, Riley's, Ab's, Panda Express, and others. We went to Desert Star, a fun comedy playhouse. You had your favorite cereals, desserts, and dinners. You spent time with friends doing activities, as well as hanging out at home with them gaming or playing board games.

One tradition at Christmas is having a present-finding hunt each Christmas Eve. Mom makes up jingles and you guys have to find where some small gift is located in the house. We had Christmas in September for two years as you had to find eight gifts hidden throughout the house and yard. You can see some of the loot is on your lap in the picture you see. It was a fun month for all of us!

The Farewell

We were so proud as you gave your farewell speech on Sunday, September 21, 2008! You were confident, strong, and gave a wonderful message.

You spoke of Helaman's son, Nephi, and his experiences. Some of the reasons you gave for going on your mission were (1) so I can be an example to others who will go, (2) because if I didn't go, the people who are prepared to hear me teach will miss out on that opportunity, (3) because I want to see the world outside the Utah bubble : ) , (4) because I want everyone else to know what I know and to feel the things I've felt, and (5) because I have seen it positively affecting everyone I've ever seen come back from a mission, (5) because I want my wife to be someone who wants to marry a returned missionary.

You had so many people in attendance, both relatives and friends. People travelled far distances to support you. There were relatives on both sides of the family, as you can see from pictures posted. You had friends from high school, friends from church, and friends from Neumont University.

We had quite a gathering after church at the house - over 80 people - who came to celebrate your day. We had some of your favorite things - ham, baked beans, brownies - and everything in between! A special day with pleasant memories with those who love and support you in your mission call!

Going Through the Temple

On September 13th at 9:30 a.m., you went through the Jordan River Temple for your endowments. It was a wonderful day. You had Mom and Dad, Bishop Brian Smith and his wife, Jodi, there with you, as well as neighbors, Gary and Sarah Higbee. Relatives who joined us were Aunt Shawna and Uncle Larry, as well as Becca and John Western. We were able to go back to the temple one time before you left on your mission. What a sweet and powerful experience!

We gathered together with friends and family at the stake house to have you ordained to the office of Elder in the Melchizedek Priesthood. Having so many family members there made it even more special!

Letter Day . . . And the Adventure Begins!

On June 27, 2008, the call letter from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints came. We frantically made phone calls and arranged for family, friends, and neighbors to gather at 3:00 p.m. for the opening. With family and friends around, as well as a couple on the phone, Zach opened the letter and read, "Dear Elder Durtschi, you have been called to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Philippines Naga Mission." Lots of cheering and congratulating, smiling and hugging ensued! What a great day!
